The wool dryer balls are great. Last like forever. And when they're done, we share the balls (takes a few years for them to unravel/fall apart) with our pets, who like to play with them in the yard. Eventually, we suspect the outdoor critters use the leftovers for their nests, or someone else's pets "steal" them
